We take a history and examine your ears, clearing wax and any debris from your ear canal. We feed back to you and provide written confirmation of treatment, any recommendations and follow up. We can pass details to your own doctor.

  • We use a specialised ear microscope and suction device to perform micro-suction. This is the ‘gold standard’ technique to remove wax, debris and foreign material from the ear.
  • This is the same service you would receive if you were referred to a hospital ENT department.
  • Typically, appointments last between 20 and 30 minutes 
  • Appointments start with  a short history
  • Wax or debris removal is performed by an experienced specialist ear, nose and throat (ENT) nurse
  • We can treat complex ears including where previous surgery has been performed  
  • Any issues or challenges can be addressed by an ENT consultant surgeon 
  • Micro-suction can be performed by a consultant ENT surgeon if you would prefer

Expert consultants who specialise in ear care

Mrs Kay Kulkarni

DipHE in Nursing, BSc (Hons) Health Studies, Primary Ear Care Diploma, Independent Nurse Prescriber.

Kay qualified as a registered nurse from the University of Plymouth in 2001. She has also attained a Diploma in Ear Care through Rotherham Primary Ear Care Centre. Kay was responsible for setting up the first ever NHS Community Microsuction Clinic in Devon in 2010. More recently she has been working at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Ear Care, treating patients with complex ear conditions.

Maria Chiaragiali

Maria qualified as a registered nurse in 2014 and she has been been working since then in the ENT Department at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Trust. Maria completed her Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice in 2022. She has been undertaking microsuction since 2019 and has developed expertise in acute and chronic ear conditions.

Judith Bradley

Judith qualified as a registered nurse in Southampton General Hospital in 1988. She subsequently worked in intensive care and attained the intensive care course in 1991. She has experience in general, cardio thoracic and paediatric intensive care nursing over 13 years.
She moved to ENT at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in 2013 and completed the microsuction course at Rotherham in 2018, gaining experience in this specialist area.
She is registered with the nursing and midwifery council.

Karen Cole

Karen is a qualified Assistant Practitioner. She attained a level 5 Diploma in Health with distinction in 2020. Karen has worked in the ENT Outpatients department for 13 years and gained experience in many aspects of ENT. She has completed a course and competencies for microsuction with Rotherham Primary Ear Care Centre.

Edmond Hernaez

Edmond is a qualified registered nurse since 2015 and has been working across London specialising as a general, orthopaedic and specialty operating theatre scrub practitioner. He is an eye specialist nurse and an anaesthetic nurse with experience at MEH NHS and GSST NHS. Edmond joined Royal Devon University Hospital NHS in 2018. He has started specialising in ENT in 2021 and now doing an Advanced Care Practitioner Masters Degree specialising in ENT. He has been doing microsuction since 2022.

Emma Prendergast

BSc (Hons) Nursing, Primary Ear Care Diploma

Emma qualified as a registered nurse from Plymouth University in 2015 since then she has worked in a variety of nursing areas, including medical, surgical/recovery and specialist areas. In 2021 she obtained a diploma in Ear Care from the Rotherham Primary Ear Care Centre. She has been working for the Royal Devon University Healthcare in Barnstaple as an aural care specialist nurse since 2022 treating patients with an array of ear conditions.

Preparation for appointment

Ideally, we would like you to use a wax softening drop such as olive oil for three days prior to your appointment.
